This story took some inspiration from Star Trek as one of the heroes is a Captain for a government that appears to be modeled after the Federation including having a fairly strict "non-interference" policy. Of course that gets ruined after her ship is forced to crash onto the planet they were attempting to defend, and the interactions with the natives result in a ton of emotional anguish for the various characters.This is a tightly woven tale with most of the elements being extremely well thought out and paced. There is the enemy empire to act as an over-arching villain and plot force, but the main story is the emotional impact of the decisions made by the core characters. And these are powerfully set up.My main complaint would have been that the story somehow still manages to be a bit sloppy with the relationships at times. They do exist and are impactful, but they also are more tied to the image of the relationship. The ship's captain and her love are described as life bonded, but at times that bond just doesn't make sense. I just didn't feel like these two were forever mates. They never seemed that well connected.Still, the action scenes were solid, the mystery and intrigue held up rather well to the reveals, and the characters were compelling to read about. I definitely want to return to Alsea in book 2 to find out more. To read this amazing story? I kept hearing about this book by an author named Fletcher and it was filled with awesome characters. Well met, Fletcher! I didn't want to put it down once I started your story! And now I'm hooked on your world building and your descriptive writing! Lancer Tal and Captain Serrado are strong women, who happen to have strong friends and lovers. Their adventures to save Alsea are amazing. Your writing is so descriptive and everything is so easy to visualize, I can't wait to start the second book in this series! So, I have it downloaded, what am I waiting on?
