This book was completely unexpected. There is so much to it that it requires a second read at minimum. Yes it is a romance, but it is much more. The time period, location, culture, and people were entirely foreign to me, yet by the end i felt like i knew them intimately. There were many losses, as was customary at that time, it is a raw and bold story that draws its vitality from a time of superstition and legend. I can see history brought to life here. I've only read one other book with such evenly matched warriors (The Lion and the Crow by Eli Easton) and there's something special about these fierce lovers and their epic connection that simply can't exist in a contemporary romance. I will say I prefer when there are alternating points of views in romance, but I see why the story was written how it was and once i accepted it I found it didn't detract from it. I could still feel Fen's passionate devotion to Cai, even if it was not first hand. Love this book and will search for more from Harper 💘 So, let me get this straight (as it were): a gay romance novel, set in the Dark Ages, on an isolated rocky peninsula at the northernmost part of the British isles, in an early Christian monastery.
